Oxygen Production Equipment Innovation

Due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, the demand for oxygen gas has tremendously increased. For many countries especially in Africa, this demand has outstripped its supply leading to oxygen crises. The demand is further exacerbated by the need for oxygen in industries as well. It is on the basis of these challenges that locally made and affordable oxygen generation equipment was developed. The initial phase of the project involved the development of a synthetic material using locally available materials in Kenya. The material is capable of selectively separating oxygen obtained from the atmosphere and regenerating autogenously among other features. The project underpins the pivotal role played by the local manufacturing sector in the economy. The equipment was assembled courtesy of the ongoing University research projects thanks to the state-of-the-art laboratories and workshops. Currently, the project is being incubated at the Innovation Centre within the University. With the intense use of oxygen in the hospitals and industry, this equipment is anticipated to provide high-quality medical and industrial oxygen at affordable cost either through installation to guarantee piped oxygen or refilling of oxygen cylinders. Primarily, the project envisages supporting the provision of Universal Healthcare Coverage in both private and public sector facilities besides meeting the ever-increasing industrial oxygen demands for various applications in the industries.
